BCI·Brain-Computer Interface Weekly Report: 240 Hours When Clinical Work, Standards, and Security Moved Together

Period: from 2026-08-20T09:55:01+09:00 to 2026-08-30T09:55:01+09:00, exactly 240 hours.

Major Trends

During this period, BCI clearly showed a move from laboratory technology toward treatment, standards, and device ecosystems. BCI is a technology that reads brain signals and converts them into computer or machine commands. In the English-speaking world, news on rehabilitation and clinical trials was strong. In the Chinese-speaking world, there were many reports on standards, industrial policy, and robot control demonstrations. In Korea, a public-private consultative body aiming for commercialization in 2035 was launched. Technology Direction

Ability Neurotech introduced an implantable device that records ECoG signals from the surface of the brain. The device sends data outside the body for processing. According to the report, the German operating-room study records for 20 to 30 minutes in patients undergoing brain tumor surgery. In the Netherlands, a one-year home-use trial with ALS participants is planned for the end of 2026. The device features 128 channels, 30,000 samples per second, infrared optical communication of up to 50 Mbps, and wireless inductive power. Paradromics said it received an FDA approval letter and expanded access to personal computing devices in the Connect-One early feasibility study. This approval opens a path for adding internet-connected devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones after specified setup and testing procedures. The company's Convey is a user system that converts decoded neural intent into communication and computer control. However, the Connexus BCI is still an investigational device. At WRC 2026 in Beijing, China, BrainCo showed a training platform connecting an EEG cap with robots. The report described the process of collecting a user's brain signals and converting them into robot control commands through algorithms. The platform was introduced as being able to connect with external devices such as humanoid robots, robotic arms, and robotic dogs. Because it was an exhibition demonstration, it is difficult to treat it as data on accuracy or safety. Clinical Evidence

The clearest clinical evidence was the IpsiHand study. Kandu announced that the NIH-supported BCI-REHAB randomized controlled trial had been published. The trial compared 12 weeks of at-home noninvasive BCI treatment with standard home exercise in chronic patients more than 6 months after stroke. The primary analysis included 62 people, with 37 in the BCI treatment group and 25 in the control group. The report said the BCI group gained 6.0 points on the UEFM, 4.5 points more than the control group, and that the proportion reaching the minimal clinically important difference was 55.5% and 9.6%. It said there were no serious adverse events or device-related adverse events in the BCI group. The literature on spinal cord injury rehabilitation showed both promise and limits. A systematic review published in Smart Wearable Technology covered 38 studies on upper-limb recovery after cervical spinal cord injury from 2016 to 2026. The paper classified BCI linked to electrical stimulation or robotic gloves as neuro-wearables that help hand control. About three quarters of the included studies showed improvement in at least one upper-limb measure, and nearly half showed clinically meaningful improvement. However, 44% were assessed as having high or serious risk of bias because of small samples and limited control groups. A Transdigital literature review with Spanish and English abstracts analyzed 12 studies on BCI and neural bridges for paraplegia from 2020 to 2025. The included technologies were cortical implants, epidural stimulation, neural bypass, and brain-spine interfaces. The paper viewed progress as having been made in hand function recovery, functional integration, and autonomy in home environments. However, it wrote that gait recovery had been less explored, samples were small, and long-term follow-up was lacking. Companies and Institutions

Gestala said that within 6 months after its launch on January 1, 2026, it raised 570 million yuan, about 84 million dollars, through two investments. The March angel round was 150 million yuan, and the July Angel+ round was 420 million yuan. The company chose chronic pain as its first indication and said it would unveil its first-generation ultrasound BCI product and brain-based model at the end of 2026, then move toward clinical trials and medical device registration. This is a signal about funding and approach, not evidence of treatment effect. Tianjin University, the Haihe Laboratory of Brain-Computer Interaction and Human-Machine Integration, and United Imaging held the first national MRI-BCI conference in Tianjin on August 23, 2026. At this event, uMR NeuroSight, an MRI-based full-stack BCI solution, was announced. The report explained that this solution covers high spatiotemporal resolution MRI, MRI hardware adaptation, MRI-compatible BCI tools, and MRI-guided neuromodulation. It said the uMR platform includes 3.0T, 5.0T, and 9.4T systems. Source: Tianjin University News, 2026-08-24, https://news.tju.edu.cn/info/1005/608619.htm

Policy and Standards

Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT announced the launch of the BCI Alliance. The announcement described the organization as a public-private consultative body responsible for BCI among the 7 SEED fields. It said about 100 people from universities, research institutes, companies, and hospitals attended, and that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon and Korean BCI Society President Paik Nam-jong would serve as co-chairs. The alliance said it would operate through divisions for research and development, commercialization, and foundation-building. Fujian Province announced that it would implement an action plan for the development of the BCI science, technology, and industrial sector from 2026 to 2030. It presented a target of exceeding 3 billion yuan in BCI industry scale within the province by 2030. By 2027, it aims to make breakthroughs in evoked EEG feature enhancement, nonlinear neural signal decoding, and high-resolution flexible electrodes, and set targets of at least 5 innovative small and medium-sized enterprises and 1 cross-strait joint laboratory. Security and Ethics

When decentralized EEG BCI exchanges data among head-worn devices, nearby hubs, and the cloud, security becomes a performance issue. A paper in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience presented PQ-NeuroLink. This architecture separates authenticated session setup from fast symmetric-key streaming paths. The paper said it supports X25519, ML-KEM-768, and hybrid key setup combining the two methods. Under highly constrained BLE one-hop conditions, hybrid M3 increased p95 latency by 0.45 ms compared with unsecured M0, and the packet delivery rate was 99.0%. A paper on BCI ethics in elder care presented six issues. They were privacy and data security, consent and autonomy based on explanation, personhood and identity, technological risk and safety, equitable access, and the balance of benefits and risks. The paper viewed decoding uncertainty as capable of leading to errors in care judgments and neural data inference as widening privacy risks. Its recommendations are to disclose uncertainty on screen, minimize data collection, and obtain consent in stages. A study on acceptance in education also shows the place of ethics. A paper in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience surveyed 800 students at 10 universities in eastern, central, and western China and interviewed 40 people. Teacher support, personal innovativeness, and effort expectancy showed positive associations with intention to accept BCI. Performance expectancy, institutional conditions, and neuroethical concerns were not significant predictors in the reported model. In the interviews, privacy anxiety, unfamiliarity with the technology, lack of school readiness, and absence of ethics review emerged as barriers. Next Moves

Technology assessment needs to become more cautious. Fabien Lotte's lecture explained that EEG BCI can be used in assistive technology, games and virtual environments, stroke rehabilitation, and mental state monitoring. The same lecture said BCI makes many errors, and that depending on the type, 10% to 30% of users may be unable to control some BCIs. Training fatigue, time of day, and individual differences can also affect real rehabilitation schedules. Source: Jaime A. Source Scope Note

Evidence from English, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish sources was reflected in the main text. Swedish-language sources had weak independent news coverage, but a transcript of a research lecture video was usable. In searches in French, German, and Russian, it was difficult to verify independently reliable new BCI facts within this period.
