It was spring 2024, in a coffee shop in Yeouido. With cherry blossoms scattering outside the window, Chairman Han Dong-hoon sipped an iced Americano and gazed quietly out at the street. At the end of his line of sight stood the round dome of the National Assembly building. Beneath that dome, the vast current that had dominated the Republic of Korea for nearly thirty years continued to swirl. It was the generation known as the '586 activist movement.'
They were youths who, in the 1980s, took to the streets armed with stones and Molotov cocktails to resist military dictatorship. It was their courage that allowed us to win a democracy where we could elect our president with our own hands.
That contribution is a history no one can deny.
Yet as mountains and rivers changed three times over, that 'courage' had become a 'privilege.' The medal of democratization became a shield protecting their exclusive cartel, and moral superiority turned into arrogance that would not permit criticism from others.
Just because a father fought against dictatorship does not mean his son can inherit that merit forever. No matter how great the sacrifice of the first generation of democratization, it cannot become a permanent free pass for the second and third generations.
Han Dong-hoon was born in 1973, a member of what people call the 'X generation.' The X generation is a unique cohort. In childhood they experienced the prosperity of freedom from absolute poverty thanks to industrialization, and in adolescence they breathed the air of liberty as they received the blessing of democratization. They do not take it for granted to sacrifice the individual for the collective. They respect personal taste, valuing skill over ideology and results over justification.
In his presidential campaign declaration, Han Dong-hoon recalled the emergence of Seo Tai-ji in spring 1992. 'At first he received harsh criticism from established critics, but he became a cultural president who changed the times. The transition of an era happens in an instant, like an explosion.' His invocation of Seo Tai-ji was not mere nostalgia. It was a will to recreate in politics that cultural shock of refusing existing order and grammar while setting new standards.
Just as Seo Tai-ji changed the grammar of music videos by crying 'I know,' Han Dong-hoon declares 'I am different' and seeks to change the grammar of politics.
The attitude Han Dong-hoon displays captures the essence of this generation's character. He approaches citizens dressed in a shirt without a necktie.
Rather than shouting grand slogans, he considers specific bills to address the problems citizens face.
What matters to him is not the past story of 'who fought for democracy.' It is the present question of 'who can improve citizens' lives right now.' He states this plainly.
"Now it is time for 586 politicians to make room so that the post-586 generation, which forms the backbone of our society, can forge their own fate."
This is not blame. It is a respectful goodbye to a generation that has played its part on history's stage. Just as a father passes the family business to his son, it is a natural request for generational transition where one era hands the torch to the next.
He is of a generation that experienced the IMF currency crisis with his whole being as a young professional and felt the profound truth that 'the age of rapid growth is not eternal.'
In 1997, what did young prosecutor Han Dong-hoon think as he watched news of the 'gold collection campaign' on television? The shock of witnessing a country that had boasted of the 'Miracle on the Han River' the day before suddenly receive an IMF bailout. That must have carved deep into his heart the lesson that 'no success is permanent.'
Therefore, rather than blind ideological struggle, he focuses on solving practical problems: immediate livelihood, youth employment, and sustainable pension reform. He confesses to feeling 'sorry' toward the 20-30-year-old generation. In an age where opportunities for rapid growth have vanished, he refuses pension reform that exploits youth or populist policies, instead making it the top priority of politics to build a 'ladder' that allows young people to accumulate assets.
The world the 586 generation passed through was an era of 'political excess.'
The side effect of political excess was that everything came to be divided by factional logic, and the struggle where 'my side is always right and your side is always wrong' became everyday.
A country where even while eating at a restaurant or when family gathers for holidays, the question 'Who did you vote for?' freezes the air. This is the bitter legacy left by 586 politics. Yet the world Han Dong-hoon seeks to open is different.
He dreams of a world ruled by common sense, fairness, and practicality. A world where children are not judged at school by their parents' profession rather than their grades. A world where you are rewarded for your hard work. A world where family is not torn apart by politics.
Han Dong-hoon's emergence is not mere 'player substitution.'
It is 'generational transition' that changes the rules of the game. It is a declaration to tear down the playing field of outdated factional logic built by activist predecessors and build a new playing field where future, science, and citizens' common sense breathe. The age of ideology is waning and the age of competence is dawning. Han Dong-hoon is the gatekeeper opening that new morning.
