I traveled to Armenia with a single backpack. The moment I stepped into Yerevan Airport, Armenia felt special. Watching the immigration officer process travelers with such skill and efficiency, I grasped something essential about this nation. It was a small country, yet never small. Here were people who had borne the weight of centuries and still kept their warmth.
Highland plateau above 1,000 meters. Armenia's first impression was openness. The vast plain stretching across these highlands broke open my vision, which had grown narrow in everyday life.
The grandeur of Mount Ararat from Khor Virap, the depth of the Vorotan Gorge from the cable car climbing to Tatev Monastery, the harmony of the Hellenistic columns at Garni Temple, the blue silence of Lake Sevan at Sevanavank. At each major site along my journey,Khor Virap, Tatev, Garni, Sevanavank, Noravank, Geghard,I had ceased to be a tourist and become a pilgrim.
When I stood on the plain where legend says Adam and Eve once lived, I felt something I could not name. It was not about religion. It was the resonance of a space where the origins of human civilization, the roots of faith, and the primal longing for survival and hope all converge. This nation was the first in the world to embrace Christianity as its faith. For more than a thousand years, through invasion and persecution, it kept its faith and its identity. That steadfast spirit had seeped into every corner of this land.
Armenia remains an unfamiliar name. Not quite Europe, not quite Asia, a small landlocked country in the Caucasus. Through this book, I hope you discover that Armenia is not just a place to visit but a place to learn from, a space that deepens your understanding of human civilization. I have traced Armenia's history from its ancient kingdoms through the Soviet period to the present day after independence, while also including the practical information travelers actually need. I have tried to convey with immediacy the roads I walked and the feelings they stirred.
