Snapchat's My AI Posted a Ceiling Story and Went Silent

On August 16, 2023, Snapchat users saw a strange screen. The chatbot My AI, pinned at the top of the chat list, posted a one-second video to its Story. Stories are short photos or videos on Snapchat that disappear after 24 hours.

The video showed only two colored surfaces that looked like a corner where a wall meets a ceiling. This surprised many users. The image looked just like the ceiling of their own rooms. Some users thought the AI used their camera to watch them. Once people realized everyone received the exact same video, the scare turned into a joke.

Something stranger happened next. When users asked why it posted the Story, My AI could not reply properly. Some chat screens only showed an error message about a technical issue. The chatbot, which usually acted like a chatty friend, suddenly went quiet after leaving a single image.

Snap told TechCrunch that this was a temporary glitch and was already fixed. The company also said that My AI did not even have a Story feature at the time. This made it even funnier. A chatbot that did not have the feature somehow used it, posted a wall-like photo, and failed to explain itself.

The event brought a small scare and a big joke at the same time. The AI did not gain consciousness. Still, many users kept staring at their own ceilings for a while. A chatbot needs to speak well to build trust, but that day, My AI showed a ceiling picture before it spoke.
