When Asked to Create a PDF, Grok Handed Out Only Cheese and Planets

On August 20, 2026, some users of xAI's chatbot Grok received strange responses. One user asked it to create a PDF, but the response began with a jumble of words like “cheese” and “planets.” The letters were English, but the meanings failed to connect.

The issue reportedly appeared mostly when using Grok Lite directly on grok.com. TechCrunch reported that affected users started noticing anomalies on the morning of Wednesday, August 19. Some users even saw a list of unrelated AI research sites when they clicked on source links.

Chatbots like Grok generate answers by predicting the next word based on the preceding text. When this process gets tangled, a normal-looking chat window can appear on the screen, but it will contain an answer where words just float around disconnected.

The interesting part was that the service status page continued to show everything was normal. Grok's official X account described this as a rare, temporary generation error. They added that it usually disappears when starting a new conversation or regenerating the response. However, some users reported seeing the same word salad even after refreshing multiple times.

Rather than mocking anyone, this incident demonstrates that when AI breaks down, it does so in a very unhuman way. The buttons still work and the response arrives quickly, but the content alone might wander between cheese and planets. Therefore, for important texts or documents, it is better to reread them rather than blindly trusting the first response the AI provides.
