Korean Stock Market Pre-Opening Briefing 2026-08-17
Conclusion: U.S. stocks edged lower over the weekend, while posting a third consecutive weekly gain. Risk appetite remains intact following the extension of the U.S.-China tariff truce. The recovery in semiconductor earnings will be this week’s key theme.
NXT premarket (actual trades from 08:00~08:50, as of 08:49): No stocks were reflected, leaving no sharp-rise or sharp-fall signals. This session is separate from the KRX opening call auction.
U.S. markets (8/14 close): Dow 53,732.41 -0.2%, S&P500 7,785.76 -0.2%, Nasdaq 26,729.16 -0.3%. Russell 2000 reached an all-time high. Markets pulled back from record highs as consumer sentiment deteriorated.
Weekend: The U.S.-China tariff truce was extended through November 10.
Exchange rate: The won-dollar rate was 1,418.3 won on Friday (8/14).
Today’s schedule: Korea’s exports for August 1~20 and the U.S. August Empire State Manufacturing Index. This week: FOMC minutes on the 20th and Nvidia earnings in late August.
Points to watch: 1) whether foreign investors continue net buying in semiconductors, 2) whether the market holds above the 7,000 level and the intensity of profit-taking, 3) whether won strength persists.
