Global Economy Top 10 2026-10-01
Period: 2026-09-30 05:30 KST - 2026-10-01 05:30 KST
1. Global government bond sell-offs continued through the final day of the third quarter. On September 30, the US 10-year yield rose to 5.29 percent, and the 30-year yield stayed in the 5.6 percent range, the highest since 2002.
2. Micron posted record-high earnings driven by the artificial intelligence memory boom. Fiscal fourth-quarter revenue was $54.23 billion, earnings per share was $32.87, and the revenue guidance for the next quarter was raised to $61.5 billion (disclosed on September 30).
3. US August Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation rose 3.4 percent from a year earlier, falling below the expected 3.7 percent. The Federal Reserve's most closely watched inflation gauge cooled faster than expected.
4. US September ADP private employment increased by 90,000, rebounding from 36,000 in August. As the federal government shutdown clouded the release of the official employment report, the weight of this figure increased.
5. US stock markets closed the third quarter and September. On September 30, the Dow fell 0.86 percent to 50,906.05, the S&P 500 fell 0.25 percent to 7,651.54, and the Nasdaq rose 0.24 percent to 26,861.06.
6. International oil prices rebounded. On September 30, West Texas Intermediate crude rose 1.31 percent to $90.55 per barrel, partially reversing the previous day's sharp drop.
7. Gold prices stabilized. On September 30, spot gold rose 0.18 percent to $4,187 per ounce, rebounding for a second consecutive day.
8. The yen continued its weakness near 157 yen per dollar. Following President Trump's remarks pointing out yen weakness, speculation grew for an additional Bank of Japan rate hike in October.
9. China's September manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell below the contraction threshold of 50. Standing at 49.8 based on a Mysteel report, it failed to significantly break out of the slump that has lasted nearly eight months.
10. The slowdown in August inflation eased vigilance over an additional fourth-quarter rate hike by the Fed. As inflation came in lower than expected, the Nasdaq gained intraday, boosting semiconductor stocks.
On September 30, the US 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.29 percent and the 30-year yield climbed to its highest level since 2002, continuing the global bond sell-off through the end of the quarter. The Dow fell 4.9 percent in September while the Nasdaq rose 1.7 percent, as artificial intelligence-related stocks widened the divergence between the indices. The yen remained weak near 157 yen.
As the US August Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation came in below expectations at 3.4 percent, the burden of additional tightening on the Federal Reserve eased. September ADP private employment rebounded to 90,000. With the US federal government budget ending on September 30, shutdown concerns cast a shadow over future indicator schedules. In Japan, speculation grew over an additional Bank of Japan rate hike in October.
West Texas Intermediate crude rebounded, rising 1.31 percent to $90.55 per barrel, and spot gold rose for a second day to $4,187 per ounce. As the restoration of Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline and the release of the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve were the background for the previous sharp drop, supply-side factors determined the direction of prices.
Watch whether the US federal government shutdown begins and follow the flow of negotiations. Eurozone September flash inflation figures will be released soon. The semiconductor stock reaction to Micron's earnings and whether US Treasury yields stay in the 5 percent range will determine the direction of risk assets.
